Gains Over Grades!

If You’re Measuring Your Child’s Success by Looking at Grades Alone, You’re Missing the Forest for the Trees….

Progress looks different for everyone. Therefore, progress should not be measured using only one standard form of measurement.

We all start at different places and will end at different places. And that’s ok.

If we only measure our children’s success by the grades in the grade book or on the report card, we are undoubtedly missing very significant portions of their growth and improvements.

To be crystal clear, think about the point ranges between the different letter grades. To get from a Low B (about 80 points) to a Low A (about 90 points), a student would need an additional 10 points.

However, to get from an F (anything 0 – 59 points) to a Low D (about 60 points), a student would need to possibly make a 60-point gain.

But, suppose that student made a 25-point gain, let’s say going from 30 points to 55 points. That’s a HUGE jump! But unfortunately, that child’s grade would still be an F using the standard American grading system.

As you can see, looking at the grade alone does not provide a full picture of the student’s progress.

So instead of focusing on grades and scores, let’s celebrate our children’s efforts. Here are a few examples:

Last night, it took you 50 seconds to write the multiples of six. But tonight, you were able to write them in 40 seconds! You shaved 10 seconds off your time! Way to go!!!! So proud of you for studying so hard.

Last week when your sister teased you with the remote, you yelled some not-so-nice words to her in anger. But tonight when she began to tease you again, you simply ignored her and went to your room to watch television. That shows maturity on your part. I see your progress. Thumbs up!

You used to have a really difficult time remembering to take your homework back to school. But lately, I see that you’re using your chart and remembering to put your homework folder in your bookbag without me having to remind you. That’s what successful students do. You’re on the right track. Proud of you!
